A stupidly long post on why I’ve headcanoned that if Drift had a holoform and/or was assigned a human gender, he would be female.
Brace yourselves as I wade into the quagmire that is IDW robot gender, and attempt to not get too heavy with it. If you’re not interested in reading an essay about IDW robo-gender yet a-frigging-gain, then just scroll on past and no harm has been done. If you’d like to read an essay about Drift that doesn’t do weird things with his gender, I happen to have a nice one here. Also, I made this post specifically to tie in with my post about his voice headcanon, so if you give a crap about THIS essay you might wanna read that too.
There has been a lot of debate recently about gender in TF, most particularly in the IDW verse. Heated, vicious debate. I am not interested in joining that debate. Right now, I’m just interested in exploring what I, as a fan, can do creatively within the currently-established canon.
IDW Cybertronians are canonically declared to be genderless. So, despite the fact that Cybertronians are visually and pronounly male-coded (to humans, anyway), it’s perfectly reasonable to hypothesize that, if one day they all woke up and went “you know what, I think I suddenly have a human-like gender identity,” they would be equally likely to be female or male or whatever else.
